The White Thing
The “White Thing”
which is what it was called
was anchored in position
to the wall in the hall
The white box
used for the stowing
of trinkets and treasures
game pieces
high heel shoes
and other fond pleasures
Old dresses
once worn on a Sunday in April
Old albums once played
on a stereo table
A note that I wrote
that was never to be given
A library book
I thought my sister had hidden
Winter coats
hats and scarves
Discovered each snow
sitting quite patiently
with no where to go
Christmas wreaths and
pretty blue ribbons
science fair projects
tucked under musty
white linens
Our forgotten possessions
cluttered and scattered about
The white box
would guard them
till our parents
threw them out
